Face Drivers

Introduction to Face Driving
Ever increasing demands on the manufacturer to improve productivity and quality have led to the need for faster machining techniques. Face drivers, along with today's new high performance equipment, let you maximize your production capabilities for minimal expense.
With a Riten USA Face Driver, the entire workpiece is exposed for machining. Therefore, you are able to machine the entire length of the workpiece in one operation. The elimination of a setup in the production process results in increased accuracy and efficiency. Furthermore, the single axis reference point established by the center point of the face driver allows for a higher concentricity.
The Riten USA Face Driver Line consists of seven hydraulic designs and ten mechanical designs. There is a face driver available for your specific application.
How A Face Driver Works
A face driver has two main components, the drive head and the mounting. The mounting locates the driver in the machine with either a morse taper shank mount directly into the machine taper; or a chuck mount chucked between special chuck jaws; or a flange mount bolted to a spindle adapter on the machine spindle. The illustration shows a morse taper shank. The drive head (also known as a carrier body) contains the compensating medium (hydraulic or mechanical); which allows the pins to adjust to variations in the locating face and the spring-loaded center point. Face driving is a simple two step clamping operation, centering followed by clamping. Under tailstock pressure, the workpiece engages the center point which locates the part and provides a consistent axis of rotation. As the tailstock continues to drive the workpiece against the center point, the axial pressure forces the spring-loaded center point back into the carrier body until the drive pins engage the face of the workpiece. Each pin individually compensates for any irregularities in the face until all of the pins are fully engaged. Under the increasing axial load, the drive pins penetrate the workpiece completing the clamping operation, while the center point maintains the axis of rotation.
The compensating medium (either hydraulic or mechanical) in the face driver assures equal penetration of the drive pins despite variations in the surface or in the squareness of the face. Therefore, surface imperfections or out of square saw cuts do not present a problem when face driving.
How to Select a Face Driver
1. Determine the finish diameter (F) of the workpiece at the driving face.
2. Choose the face driver series whose maximum driving diameter (G) is smaller than the finish diameter (F).
3.(G) should be .020 smaller than (F) to allow for clearance.
4.Check the maximum raw stock size (S). (S) should not be more than three times (G) for maximum gripping capabilities. If you require a larger maximum raw bar stock size,
5. Determine the rotation of the headstock to determine drive pin direction. See diagram below:
6.Choose the drive pins that allow maximum driving diameter (G). Full width drive pins are the first choice for maximum gripping force.
However, offset, half offset drive pins are also available to meet a broad range of part diameters. See diagram below:
7. Choose the mounting styles (taper
Mount, flange and chuck mount) that are available for each Series of face drivers. If you choose a flange mount and plan to mount the driver directly to the spindle of the machine a spindle adapter will be required. See diagrams below:

Introduction
We don't put our name on anything but the best.
High-volume turning requires tough, consistently accurate collets and collet chucks. What better name to trust than Riten, respected around the world for quality work holding products
Riten Collet Chucks are precision ground with guaranteed repeatability of .0002" TIR. Tolerances are held uniformly from the mounting to the working collet taper. Our products include both power and manual chucks with dead length or pull back operation. These chucks are ideal for first or second operation chucking.
Riten Collets are designed for improved accuracy and repeatability, superior gripping power, and extended service life. To achieve this, we load the collet with an induction coil at the base of the slots and heat the collet to a glowing red hot temperature. A spreader is inserted into the slots and pushed down on the collet face. After cooling for one to two minutes the spreader is removed and the collet cools completely. This process gives our collets a spring of .010” and drastically improves the life of the collet. Few other manufacturers go to this length to ensure a quality collet.
You'll also find Riten collets are easier to attach, because we mill off the thin top edge of the threads to prevent binding in the radius of the female thread.
Collet Chucks or 3-Jaw?
For accurate, high-volume turning of bar stock or other parts under 3-1/8" in diameter, your best bet is a collet chuck. Why?
- Consistent centering. Collet chucks grip the workpiece around the entire circumference, with no slippage when the stock is regripped, and less risk of deformation to thin-walled workpieces.
- Better tool clearance. Short or thin parts can be machined closer to the chuck face for better accuracy and less distortion.
- Higher speeds. Compact, lightweight collet chucks have a greater tolerance for high centrifugal forces, hold their gripping force more consistently, and reduce the load on machine spindle bearings.
- Longer life. In high-volume production, collet chucks have proven to have a consistently longer service life than 3-jaw chucks.
The Riten Selection
Riten Collet Chucks are precision ground with guaranteed repeatability of .0002” TIR. Tolerances are held uniformly from the mounting to the working collet taper.
Riten offers three basic types of power collet chucks:
- Pullback. Simple, one-piece design used on standard lathes.
- Set Length. Used where precise pick-off is required. Little or no axial part movement.
- Setrite®. Set length chuck with ultra-fine four-screw adjustment feature. The most accurate chuck in the metalworking industry.
Our set length series includes special short-profile models using the versatile Multibore collet, and three labor-saving quick change chucks with pre-loadable bayonet caps.
NOTE: All collet chucks require a drawtube adapter to fit specific machines.
Unique Manufacturing Process
Riten size-for-size collets (5C, 16C and R8) are designed for excellent accuracy and repeatability, superior gripping power, and extended service life. To achieve this, we load the collet with a coil at the base of the slots, heat the collet to a glowing red, insert the spreader into the slots, and push down on the collet face. After cooling for one to two minutes, the spreader is removed and the collet cools completely. This process gives our collets a spring of .010” and drastically improves the life of the collet. Few other manufacturers go to this length to ensure a quality collet.
You’ll also find Riten collets are easier to attach, because we mill off the thin top edge of the threads to prevent binding in the radius of the female thread.
Special Models
For bar work, the Multibore collet gives you great flexibility. Just 12 collets provide every size for 1/8” to 3-1/8”. Multibores are segmented to close parallel for uniform gripping on undersize or oversize bars, with no marring of the finished parts.
For second operation, the B Type Spring Collets are ideally suited for short gripping with both Multibore and Quick Change power chucks.
Spindle Repair
Riten Industries, Inc. repairs Red Head Spindles, other pulley type spindles and motorized ID grinding spindles. Accuracies of rebuilt spindles are guaranteed to meet or exceed the manufacturer's original specifications.
This service includes disassembly and detailed inspection prior to customer notification of cost and turn around. The repair includes the replacement and/or refurbishing of all worn parts (including the in-house fabrication of obsolete or unavailable components). All units are run in and tested for vibration, temperature and accuracy.
Rebuilt spindles carry a one year limited factory warranty.
